They do not charge for the service but in turn if you like their product and can even just spare a couple of bucks for their maintenance and upkeep they accept your donation. I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from download.com I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. I'm sorry, but anti-virus software that is free is most likely inadequate. I know this from experience, if you want to scrimp on something, don't make it anti-virus software. Just go with a less expensive, but decent brand name one.

You'll thank yourself later when your computer is still running and hackers aren't getting in.

I use The Shield Deluxe. Its like $35.00 for a year. I'm sure if you can afford to be online and own a computer, you can afford to pay for that.

It auto updates, scans occasionally, and never interrupts your usage, with the exception of when you first install it, it will want to do a full system scan, then confirm with you when unexpected activity happens.

After about a week of using it, you'll basically never see it again, it just silently waits for viruses and updates.

I have never tried the sbc antivirus. But I just keep on telling my friends to go with Norton. I do find that they are much better. But it is up the person. I am running windows xp and have recently downloaded several programs that say they are free but they only scan for free they don't remove anything. You have to pay for that service. If someone can tell me where to get a free copy of one that will remove the garbage let me know. If it works you will surely get ten points...
