Anyway, get AVG antivirus and spybot search%26destroy as antispyware. The reason I am recommending these because both can run in safe mode and from boot cd(something like BartPE).

Many others have already given you many list but no one said the key thing. How to clean?

Install those software and do update.

Method-1: First disconnect your internet connection(physically unplug wires). Then run spyware scanner first. Then antivirus. Then restart pc. Now I recommend run disk clean up: either use windows disk cleanup tool or get ccleaner(www.ccleaner.com). Clean all junk. Reconnect internet.

Method-2(better option): Unplug internet. start computer in safemode. Run antivirus first and then antispyware. restart computer in normal mode.

Method-3(best option when all above can't clean infection): Unplug internet. Make some boot security disk like bartPE. http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ .

Now, boot from that cd and run antivirus and antispyware. it will clean to the root.

Hope you understand the importance of these steps.

Just as recommendation: After you clean infection, install a good firewall like zonealarm and use safe browser like opera(www.opera.com).

I use avast and have never had a problem. Just dont let the serial key expire so it will keep up to date with the latest virus definitions. Spyware is a different matter, do a search for superantispyware (one word) its free too.

You shouldn't have two anti-virus programs actually running at the same time. Symantec and Norton are the same thing. AVG has the advantage of being free but it's not as good at finding and removing viruses as Norton. According to AVG, their AV will only work for actual viruses, which are no longer the main threat. Norton will find and remove other malware, i.e. spyware.

Like AVG anti-virus, Ad-Aware and Spybot Search %26 Destory aren't best of breed, the free versions of AVG Anti-Spyware and SuperAntiSpyware are better. If you're using IE also use SpywareBlaster, this will stop a lot of the crap getting on your pc.

I use AVG and I like it. Just make a system restore point and you can always go back if it makes your system crash.
Symantec doesn't like other antivirus protection working with it. When you 1st install it they make sure any others are gone. You know that you've crashed your machine, so I'd say delete it 1st.

No you can't use AVG Legally for your internet cafe. It is only free for home use or personal use. You will have to buy a copy of it for business use. Avast is the same way. Both are great Anti Virus software but I like AVG the best. Anything is better then norton.

Free anti virus is a great rescue, but usually it is not the best, personally I first search for anti virus comparisons, and pick the best, and also the one that suits my computer configuration, as some security suites are VERY heavy for any normal PC, I would suggest an Internet search for "anti virus comparison" and then you can decide... :)

I don't know of any web-site giving all-encompassing reviews of more than a few programs at a time.

However, I've tried many a/v's over the years, some paid-for and some free, and personally I much prefer the famously free AVG. Regularly updated and efficient (and with great support from grisoft's cz site), it's never let me down (yet). I'd pay for one if I thought it was worth it, but I haven't found one yet.

Just a personal opinion.
The only anti virus worth paying for is Nod32 by a company called Eset.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. I have used it for many years, and had no problems, it is not as good as the paid version, but far better than not using anything, it is actually the last years version of their software.

Yes, it is free. I have used it for several months and I have not seen any threat of expiration---Even if there were an expiration date, I believe that you can always just download it again. There are also weekly updates to the virus definition file, but you can always get a daily update by downloading directly from the Norton site.

It does not run as 'heavy' as Norton's and is far easier to use. Best of all - virus definitions are free for the life of the product. I have used AVG and recommend it to all of my clients for years!

Not entirely certain where I found it because I downloaded it a really long time ago, but it frequently updates and I've never had to pay for it - and never had any problems which is amazing because I get a lot of files sent me from all sorts or weird and wonderful people.

Go for AVG free home edition...n update it on regular basis....its pretty good...n moreover if u used panda/norton/aol/anitirus/qh earlier...u will see the difference....AVG will never slow ur system...the process is pretty well organized.....

AVG and AVAST are the two mostly recommended; they are both free. Avast requires yearly registration; AVG does not. Updates are good for both, but Avast has fewer problems. The AOL antivirus is good but acts like a virus itself and prevents legitimate downloads and installation of some of your programs.

And good luck trying to get rid of that AOL program. At least Norton has a free tool at Symantec to get rid of Norton; it would be helpful if AOL provided a similar tool. My personal favorite is Avast, of the free anti-virus programs. Nothing is 100% though, and switching to Mozilla Firefox or the latest Opera browsers eliminate spyware and malware pretty much. PC World, Kim Commando, Leo Laporte all give good tips.

I've tried all three. Although Norton may be the most common antivirus program, I found it and McAfee difficult to completely uninstall if needed. Also these two are huge drains on your computers memory. Trendmicro does a decent job and offers the free online scanner Housecall.

Symantec Corporate Edition in Firewall and Antivirus are very reliable and I like them a lot.
You're pretty much **** out of luck with Symantec and Mcaffee as they're both memory hogs. If you got the memory (RAM), go with Symantec. Mcafee always did suck. Trend micro, haven't kept up to date about them.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. AntiVir and avast are pretty good. But, AVG is clearly the best free anti-virus package. Here's why:

1. It's easy to install and download. It will install even with other commercial AV packages running. That allows you to switch without leaving your self vulnerable.

2. It has a small memory footprint. It is able to protect your system using less the 10 MB or RAM.

3. It updates without any user intervention. I've been running AVG for over a year and not once have I had to intervene in update.

4. It works!!. I've not been infected by a virus even once since I installed AVG (I do also follow some best practices ... see below)

If your using a commercial AV package like McAfee or Norton. You are wasting your money and your RAM. To justify their continuing subscription fees they bloat the software with features you DO NOT need. Those features bog your system down without doing much to keep you safer.

i also recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.

As for other malware such as adware, spyware, keyloggers and the rest, get at least two programs to search and delete them. I use Adaware SE and Spybot S%26D. Both are free for personal use.

As I do with other free antivirus and antispyware programs I run the free version of Avast overnight when I am sleeping. This allows me to do a thorough deep scan of all files on my hard drive. It takes hours. But unlike other antivirus programs Avast pauses its scan when it finds something, and demands that one take an action before it continues the scan. So when I wake up I get rid of that single piece of malware. I can't just pause the scan and continue the next night because Avast does not remember the pause once the computer has been shut down during the day. It starts the scan from the beginning. Is there a way to get Avast to finish a scan, and only list the malware after it has finished? This is how other antivirus programs work.

I use and recommend Avast, but this is more difficult than it needs to be...

You have to be running Avast in the "Simple User Interface."

So if you are currently running it with that silly media player face, you have to change it to Simple User Interface. I'm not positive, but it may require a restart to get the new interface in effect after you choose the new interface.

THEN you have to configure it as for a boot-time scan: Tools %26gt; Schedule Boot Time Scan... Then on the drop-down menu tick 'Advanced options.' Then set that to whichever option you choose.

I *believe* that these settings will then stay in effect. (I personally prefer Avast to ask me what I want to do, so I can't say truly for sure that they will stay... but it will definitely stay that way for the boot-time scan if you choose to run it.)

Click on control panel. Click on add or remove programs. Look for Norton, and uninstall. Norton is notoriously difficult to remove, so it may take more than one try.

Nothing to worry here. It's due to norton files still persist in registries %26 drives. Open search option-%26gt;Type norton*.* -%26gt;It list's all files %26 folders persisted in a perticular drive in which you installed it.-%26gt;Select all files %26 folders-%26gt;delete.

While deleting, you cant delete some files, bcoz of interlinking between files. So select few few files %26 repeat the process until you delete all.

This process is after removing the Norton from Add/Remove program from control panel.
